How To Deal With Dry Skin, Through Pregnancy And Beyond
As though pregnancy does not offer enough potential discomfort, as the winter months approach one must deal with dry skin. This is not unusual during pregnancy, not serious, and is to be expected to some degree with an increasing waistline. As skin stretches, it becomes tighter, less pliable, dry, and frequently itchy. Dry skin care during pregnancy can be as simple as taking a trip to the local pharmacy to purchase skin cream. Try to avoid creams and lotions which have added fragrance and chemicals.
What appears to be dry skin can also be an issue for newborns. In fact, it is quite common. What this condition actually is, is the skin’s adjustment to conditions outside of the womb. Remember, this newborn has been in fluid for about nine months or so. Do not scrub or scrape at the baby’s skin. It will generally heal itself. While in the baby bath, rub the baby gently with a soft, wet cloth. After bathing, baby lotion may be applied to add comfort and softness. Again, remember to stick with fragrance free, natural skin products.
Breast feeding has become more popular in recent years. Just about all nursing mothers will tell of the dryness surrounding the nipple area as the result of breast feeding. There are special creams and lotions which are made specifically for this purpose. It is always best to check first with your pediatrician, in order to make sure that a particular cream is safe for your child. Do yourself a favor, and purchase a double electric breast pump. This will require much less time to express breast milk, and keep the area softer and less itchy.
Chronic skin conditions should be seen by your doctor, to ensure that a medicated skin cream is not required. There is no gain in being more uncomfortable than necessary. Do not ever be too embarrassed to ask about this, or any other issue. These doctors truly have seen it all.
If your pregnancy has been planned, you should take the opportunity to get as healthy as you can before hand. Exercise, eat right, avoid cigarette smoke, alcohol, and chemicals. In other words, avoid anything that you would not put directly into your baby’s mouth. Remember, pregnancy is a relatively short amount of time, when compared to the lifetime of the unborn child. If the pregnancy was not planned, begin being healthier as soon as you suspect that you may be pregnant.
Do not suffer with any discomfort that can be avoided, while pregnant. There is usually an easy solution. Be sure to make yourself as comfortable as possible.
Dry skin care may just be your biggest pregnancy concern, and you are blessed.
