ingrown hairs

Although I have been waxing for years I recently started getting painful ingrown hairs. When I went looking for dermatologist advice on the web I came across a great site called DermTV.com. On this site a New York Dermatologist named Dr Neal Schultz tackles a host of skin related problems and dermatology questions. I had come looking for acne help and advice on dealing with ingrown hairs, but I ended up watching an entire series of short videos containing advice for caring for your skin. Wow!

 

Anyway, back to dermatology questions and ingrown hairs – a very uncomfortable problem, especially since mine sit in the bikini line so they chafe under almost all of my clothing. The thing is, this started happening about 3 months ago, and I thought they had healed – the bumps went away, there was no more soreness or redness, but this week they came back and are more painful than ever. The video episode where Dr Schultz talked about ingrown hairs was so interesting. He helped me understand how a hair is supposed to grow, and what happens that causes it to become ingrown. This was real dermatologist advice, from a real dermatologist all for free. I “heart” the Internet!

 

Dr Schultz explained that ingrown hairs happen when the lining of the hair follicle gets damaged and waxing is a prime cause of this damage. Without the inner lining to ‘guide’ the hair straight through the skin, the hair will grow at an angle and be unable to get through the skin. The resulting ingrown hair will always be an ingrown hair since the hair follicle does not grow back. So every 3 months or so when an old hair ‘dies’ and a new one starts to grow it too will come in crooked. Talk about getting your dermatology questions nailed! Dr Shultz’ official dermatologist advice was to use laser hair removal to solve the problem.

 

From now on when I have dermatology questions the first place I am going to check is DermTV.com. I was really impressed with Dr Schultz and his straight forward approach to dermatologist advice. Every video I watched was clear and concise and really full of information. He was right. I had laser treatment a few weeks ago and I haven’t had problems since. I am going to do it for all the hair I want removed. No more bikini waxes, no more pain, no more ingrown hairs!

The first product Dr Schultz says is important is a skin exfoliate to remove the dead cells on the surface. This will maximize your chances for healthier looking skin.  Ok, I have one of those (actually, I have four, so I guess three of them can be discarded).   The next is sunscreen.  Hmmm, I wouldn’t have put this in my list of skin care products, but I guess it makes sense.  Sunscreen protects against aging, spots and even skin cancer.  Yea, that qualifies as care.The last one is a topical anti-oxidant. This product also helps to maintain younger looking skin through rejuvenation of the skin cells.He says that products with vitamin C are better for you.  I had to sort through more than half my collection to find any product that actually had the vitamin C ingredients Dr. Schultz recommends. 

 
After listening to his skin care tips, I felt rather embarrassed at how many extra creams, lotions and other unnecessary items I had for skin care.  Now, he didn’t say these other items were ineffective and, not willing to part with some of my personal favorites, I did keep some of the other products.  But I now know that, if I’m going on a quick weekend getaway and need to travel light that my makeup bag is going to be much easier to carry.
