On Mice And Moisturisers, Or Why Mice (And Women) Need A Natural Moisturiser.
There’s very good reasons why mice should be using a natural moisturiser. And many of those reasons also apply to people, including the millions of women who use moisturisers in America.
A recent study was set up to investigate whether caffeine could cause skin cancer in mice. As a part of that study each mouse had moisturiser applied to it’s skin 5 times a day for 17 weeks. The study is reported in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Although this was not being studied, the researchers were surprised to find that the application of these moisturisers on the skin of the mice “increased the total number of histologically characterized tumors by 69%”. In other words the mice that received the moisturiser had a very significant increase in their rate of skin cancer.
Lets examine this a little more closely and find out why mice, and millions of women in the US who use moisturisers everyday, should be much more seriously considering using a natural moisturiser.
There were 4 different moisturisers used in the study. These were Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin, or Vanicream. All 4 of these moisturisers contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLF) as well a mineral oil.
Mineral oil is a petrochemical product that comes from crude oil. It is found extensively in a very wide range of personal products such as skin care and anti aging products, cosmetics and other personal products. It is used so widely because it is incredibly cheap. Mineral oil is also found in many moisturisers, and has been linked to cancer and other serious health issues.
You also find sodium lauryl sulphate in a wide range of soaps and shampoos and many consumers are aware that there are health risks from using products that contain sodium lauryl sulphate. For these reasons there are now soaps and shampoos available which advertise that they do not contain sodium lauryl sulphate. Sodium lauryl sulphate has been linked to cancer and other health problems as well. But many consumers are completely unaware that it is also found in many modern moisturisers.
Of course the fact that moisturisers containing mineral oil and sodium lauryl sulphate were used on the mice, and that the mice contracted skin cancer, doesn’t prove that the sodium lauryl sulphate or the mineral oil caused the skin cancer. Nevertheless it is still a worrying conclusion. To establish the exact cause of the skin cancer would require more study. But it may have you sufficiently worried to more seriously consider using a natural moisturiser that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate or mineral oil in the future. But there is one more fact about which you should also be aware.
And this is it. The scientists were so concerned about the result that they decided to do the study again using a more natural moisturiser which didn’t contain either sodium lauryl sulphate or mineral oil. When they did the study a second time using this more natural moisturiser they found no increase in the rate of skin cancer in the mice at all.
So you can see that there are good reasons why millions of American women, as well as mice, should be using a much more natural facial moisturiser rather than a moisturiser that they may be using now, which may contain sodium lauryl sulphate and mineral oil.
There’s hundreds or even thousands of personal products such as skin care products that contain chemical and petrochemical ingredients, many of which are known to have health implications. Some of these ingredients have been shown to cause cancer and may well be found in the moisturiser, as well as well as other skin care products that you may have even used today.
There are excellent natural skin care products available, including natural face moisturisers, which do not contain any of these chemical and petrochemical ingredients and which work extremely well.
